About the activity
It's important to understand how children feel about the journey to school. If children don't feel safe on the roads, they are less likely to feel positive about active travel generally.
This survey can help you understand how safe they feel on the roads around the school, even if it's just for a short walk from the car to the school gate. You can adapt it to address local areas and issues specifically, or use this version to get a general picture. If you have a sustainability club or group like TfL Explorers Ambassadors, they can print the survey out and ask children to fill it in, or you can ask teachers to do the survey in class.
Once you know how the children feel about the local roads, you can try and understand if things can be improved for them. You could also carry out a survey of parents and carers, to see their perspective too.
Activity steps
Step 1
Plan your approach - Discuss and plan with your school travel working group how you want to carry out the survey with pupils
Step 2
Consult – Carry out the survey with parents/carers to find out how they travel to school (download template from Resources)
Step 3
Act on your findings - Use your findings to plan future events or carry out follow up consultations to highlight success or the need for more work
Step 4
Feedback - Regularly update parents/carers with your TfL Travel for Life news letting them know how their ideas have contributed through your school’s newsletter and website
Step 5
Tell your story - Add your story to the TfL Travel for Life website and feedback to your borough officer
