  • Promotes positive travel behaviours
  • Encourages parental and staff participation

About the activity

Cycle Skills for Adults give staff and parents/carers an opportunity to build their confidence on the road. This in turn allows them to become positive cycling role models for pupils.

How it works

Contact your borough officer to organise a Cycle Skills session for a group of adults at your school. The sessions are tailored to participants’ skills, time and location and last one to two hours depending on your borough.

Bicycles are available to borrow for those who do not have their own.

This activity can work well when promoted at the same time as Bikeability training for your pupils.

What you’ll need

  • A group of keen participants. They can be new to cycling or regulars - there’s always something to learn
  • An outdoor space in which to hold the training
  • A cycling instructor
  • Bicycles if participants have them. If not, ask your trainer to bring some along

Please note: Cycle Skills sessions are free to anyone who lives, works or studies in London. This activity card shows how the training can be used in a school setting, but adults can organise a session independently, too.

Activity steps

Step 1

Who's interested? Gauge interest in Cycle Skills by speaking to your colleagues and parents/carers in the playground or ask via text or email

Step 2

Name the date. Speak to your borough officer to arrange a session. Choose a time convenient for participants – this may be after school or at the weekend

Step 3

Promote your activity. Spread the word about the training sessions in your school newsletter, on notice boards and speak to staff and parents/carers in the playground

Step 4

Check for success. How many people attended the session? Ask if they’ve put their new found skills into practice and find out what you could do better next time

Step 5

Tell your story! Upload your evidence to "my activities"
