About the activity

NB: We’re bringing together all the TfL education programmes, including STARS, under one exciting new umbrella programme called TfL Travel for Life. They will be the same great programmes, but with a new name and a new look, easier online process and dedicated support team. STARS for primary schools will be renamed TfL Explorers. STARS for secondary schools will be renamed TfL Pioneers.

Organise a practical pedestrian skills training programme to help your pupils develop their road safety knowledge.

In supervised small groups pupils explore the roads around the school and discuss safe and unsafe places to cross. Pupils then practice crossing roads safely - with an adult if under 10 years old, or independently if Year 6. They discuss how to identify safer crossing points and The Green Cross Code.

Training is usually run by a borough officer or a private company. Speak to your borough officer to discuss the pedestrian travel training options available for your school. T

How to evidence your activity

  • Involve your borough officer: Share your ideas, agree your objectives and discuss any challenges you face
  • Record the feedback from your pupils. Take pictures of pupils having their training or, if pictures can't be taken ask them to draw a safer crossing place that they used on the day of the training and explain how to use it
  • Sign in to TfL Travel for Life website to add your story. Explain the activity, add photos, include any promotional materials or evaluation forms along with your pupils’ feedback

This activity supports the Vision Zero target to eliminate death and serious injuries on London’s streets.

Activity steps

Step 1

Set a date - Speak to your head teacher and borough officer about pedestrian skills training options and set a date

Step 2

Parent power - Send a letter to parents about the training session and let them know the important road safety messages their children will cover. Also ask for volunteers to help on the day, if necessary

Step 3

Before the day - Complete pre-training workbooks and worksheets provided by your borough officer in class with your pupils

Step 4

On the day - Support your pupils and remember to take photos of them engaging with the session!

Step 5

Check for success - Complete evaluation forms with your pupils and talk to them about what they learnt and whether they found the session useful

Step 6

Tell your story - Add your story to the TfL Travel for Life website and feedback to your borough officer
