Public Transport

How it helps

  • Supports the PSHE National Curriculum
  • Promotes positive travel behaviours
  • Raises awareness of Air Quality

About the activity

Promote the use and benefits of public transport in your school to encourage positive travel behaviours and support pupils and staff to travel sustainably.

There are lots of ways you can do this, here are some ideas:

  • Include local bus or train routes or links to journey planning sites on your school’s website
  • Display local bus information on your school travel noticeboard
  • List public transport information in new pupil joining packs and communications to parents at the start of the school year
  • Share the environmental and health benefits of public transport use, including Air Quality benefits

What you’ll need

  • Up-to-date bus information
  • A travel notice board in a prominent location in your school

Activity steps

Step 1

Know your numbers. Survey your pupils to find out how many travel to school by public transport

Step 2

Plan your promotion. Share the results with your borough officer and decide how you will promote public transport to pupils, staff and parents

Step 3

Spread the word. Work with your working group to promote public transport in line with your plan – this could be on your website, notice board or in the school’s newsletter

Step 4

Check for success. Re-do your survey to see if there has been an increase in the number of pupils using public transport

Step 5

Tell your story. Upload your evidence to "my activities"
