How it helps

  • Supports gold accreditation
  • Promotes active travel at leadership level

About the activity

Make safe and active travel part of your school's strategic plans. This will help to engrain the programme into the school's ethos, highlighting that sustainable and active travel is a key part of school life.

You could:

  • Create an active travel policy and get this signed off by your Head Teacher
  • Within your policy include the environmental and health benefits of active travel including air quality
  • Add your school travel targets and plans to your School Improvement Plan to help raise the profile of your work towards accreditation

How to evidence your activity

  • Record the feedback from your governors, senior leadership team and other staff
  • Add your evidence in "my activities". Explain your activity and include copies of your travel policy, strategic plans and School Improvement Plan

Activity steps

Step 1

Involve your borough officer. Speak to you borough officer about your options for including active travel in your school’s future strategic planning

Step 2

Get strategic. Include TfL Travel for Life as an agenda item at governors’ and senior leadership meetings and discuss how you'd like to make safe and active travel part of the school’s strategic plans

Step 3

Check for success. Is safe and active travel now a feature in the school’s wider strategy? Has it had an impact on the school’s collective attitude towards travel to and from school?

Step 4

Tell your story. Upload your evidence to "my activities"
