Involve the senior management team and school governors in your TfL Travel for Life work to champion sustainable and active travel at a strategic level.
Here are some ideas of how to get your SMT and governors involved:
- Include the School Travel Plan as an agenda item at governors and senior management meetings at least once a year
- Invite them to become members of your school travel working group
- Invite them to attend TfL Travel for Life activities and events, or to play an active role in their planning and implementation
- Ask them to present certificates or awards to TfL Travel for Life competition winners in assemblies
- Ask your head teacher to speak to new and existing parents/carers about travelling sustainably to schoolÂ
Activity steps
Step 1
Promotion. Let senior management and governors know about TfL travel for life and its benefits. Present it in a meeting, send them a link to the website or invite them attend an event
Step 2
What do they think? Invite governors or senior management to join your school travel working group meetings and ask for their opinions and advice on your school’s travel issues
Step 3
Get strategic. Include TfL travel for life as an agenda item at governors and SMT meetings
Step 4
Be inclusive. Invite senior management and governors to get involved in activities and events as organisers, volunteers or participants

Check for success. Has the SMT been as involved as you’d hoped? At the end of term or year discuss your progress and areas for improvement
