About the activity

World Car Free Day is an annual day to encourage drivers to leave their car at home and raise awareness of the impact of vehicles on the environment. By taking part, your school will be part of a global movement to encourage active and safe travel on the journey to school. You’ll be joining children across London in celebrating the benefits of active, sustainable and independent travel.

On the day you could run an assembly and hold a whole host of travel activities to encourage parents to leave the car at home, it is entirely up to your school! See the resources section for ideas.

Encourage those who need to drive to Park and Stride – where parents park their cars a distance from school and walk the last part of their journey. This could be launched at the same time as your TfL Travel for Life Car Free Day.

Activity steps

Step 1

Get planning! Plan the travel activities you will be running on the day such as holding an assembly or running a play school street.

Step 2

Monitor. Think about how you will monitor the event. You could set up a survey group and carry out a hands-up survey before the event. On the day carry out another survey to compare the results and check for success.

Step 3

Promote. Encourage your pupils to create a poster to display on a prominent notice board and communicate to parents using our letter template.

Step 4

On the day. Deliver all your planned activities and celebrate your success!

Step 5

Tell your story. Upload evidence in "my activities".
