Explorers Ambassadors Seminar

Schools from all over London sent pupil representatives to a sustainability event at TfL’s Stratford headquarters. Over 200 pupils from 38 different primary schools came together over two days to share inspiration and ideas about how to get people walking, scooting and cycling.

The event was for schools taking part in the TfL Explorers Ambassadors Challenge, where pupils take the lead on persuading parents to leave the car behind on the school run and choose active or sustainable travel instead. The pupils planned a travel competition to inspire people to make positive transport choices, and then practised the communication skills they’ll need to encourage car lovers to change their ways!

The programme is intended to help young people become the green leaders of the future, and to see in practise how small actions can combine to make big changes. One teacher said “Such a great motivational day for children and adults as well”

The children loved the event, enthusiastically throwing themselves into every activity. One excited pupil told us "I enjoyed how we were treated like the VIPs and how tall the building was and our A3 sheet. I would change nothing!"

If you’d like your school to take part in TfL Explorers Ambassadors Challenge, or the secondary school programme TfL Pioneers Ambassadors Challenge, get in touch at travelforlife@tfl.gov.uk. There’s still time to join this school year, and taking part in the challenge can help you achieve Gold TfL Travel for Life accreditation, in recognition of your work to reduce car use on the school run.
