How Belmore became Best Newcomers

Belmore Primary Academy, Hillingdon were this year's deserving winners of the 'Best Newcomer' award

The background

When Mr Chamberlain took the lead on TfL Travel for Life activity last year, he had no idea he'd take Belmore all the way to Top Schools!

With their school located on a busy congested road, it was always going to be an uphill struggle to convince parents to make the switch to active travel, but despite the odds they made great strides!

How they did it

After pitching their great ideas at a 'Dragon's Den' event run by the local council, Belmore pupils managed to secure a huge £500 investment! They used the money to run a road safety poster competition and the two winners now have their work proudly displayed as large railings banners (alongside their Gold award banner, of course!)

They also ran active travel activities such as Bikeability and Pedestrian training, which all helped to encourage alternatives to car travel.

What does the future hold?

Belmore are not resting on their success! After sharing the results of a road safety survey from parents, their local council are now considering them for 'School Streets' which would make the road far safer for children.

We wish them the best of luck and can't wait to hear what they do next!
