There's no slowing down for award-winning Telferscot!

Telferscot - a school of innovation and inspiration

We spoke to Jake Henry from Telferscot Primary School, Lambeth, to find out how things were going since winning the Top Schools Innovation Award in 2023.

One of the innovations that caught the attention of our judges was the action of Telferscot’s Eco Team who have worked tirelessly to create positive change, such as campaigning for a zebra crossing on a busy road. Teachers, children and parents all got involved, with some parents getting very competitive about their eco credentials!

As well as working hard to encourage active travel, the Eco Team found plenty of other activities that all pupils could get involved with, such as sharing their pictures from ‘Meat Free Monday’.

That winning feeling!

The school were absolutely ‘buzzing’ to win the award, and the Air Pollution team shared their experiences of the ceremony in KS1 and KS2 assemblies. They have also proudly displayed their certificate and Gold accreditation banner.

Since winning their award, one of the many activities the school has taken part in was Electricity Free Day, where pupils were not allowed to use any power between 8.30am and 4pm. They made the most of the day, utilising their outdoor classroom, with some pupils commenting that it was ‘like the stone age’ and asking if this was what school was like when their teachers were there!

Going for gold

Winning the award certainly hasn’t slowed Telferscot down – they completed their accreditation activities months ahead of the deadline and have now been received another Gold award. This is incredibly impressive work, and we’re excited to see what they do next.
