How it helps

  • Helps new families understand about active, safe transport options for the journey to school
  • Encourages families to choose walking scooting or cycling over car use
  • Helps identify barriers to active and sustainable travel

About the activity

A coffee morning or after school session is a great time to promote active travel to your new families and pupils and find out what influences their travel choices.

Promoting active travel helps reduces congestion around the school, which in turn improves air quality locally. It also helps the pupils get more activity into their day.

This is an opportunity to show parents the importance of starting the day with activity. Studies have shown this helps students begin the day ready to learn. It also offers a chance to discuss the negative impact congestion around the school has on road safety, air quality and the local residents. You can find out what they consider the barriers to active travel, and us the information to identify the issues affecting your school run.

How to evidence your activity

Take a screengrab of any emails you sent to families. Record any feedback you get at the coffee morning or similar sessions, or save the survey results

Activity steps

Step 1

Set the date for the session welcoming new parents. You can either add the information into a general welcome session or set up a special session about travelling to school

Step 2

Ask families to feedback. You could print out the short survey and get a group of older students to ask some families to fill it in at the session, or you could send it out by email afterwards. Tip – using an online form like SurveyMonkey or MS Forms makes it much easier. Its quick to paste the questions in and saves a lot of time later!

Step 3

Share useful information in the school newsletter, using the template in the resources section

Step 4

Collate the results of the survey and use it to identify issues affecting active or sustainable travel.
